Rundown Café
During our visit to Duck during the last week of August 2003, our family ate dinner at the Rundown Café. Once again, the service was great and the food was fresh, full of flavor, and a pleasant diversion from the ordinary seafood scene. The prices are very reasonable as well.
The Rundown has been around for several years and a favorite for our family. It is appealing in that it is casual, decorated with brightly painted walls, and wonderful artwork. It is also kid-friendly with a kid's menu listing all the standard kid favorites (pizza, chicken fingers, pb&j, grilled cheese.) They sell great t-shirts, have a bar on the upper level, and the restaurant downstairs is non-smoking.
The menu has an island flair and features dishes with both Caribbean and Polynesian influences. We started out with conch fritters as an appetizer. I had a salad topped with a fresh grilled tuna steak. I requested their house dressing (called Journey's End). It goes great with the fresh, crisp veggies and the grilled fish.
My husband had the grilled tuna special. It was served on a bed of cold Asian noodles. The tuna was blackened and spicy enough to have character but did not overpower the freshness of the fish. It was dressed perfectly with a good balance between sweet and spicy.
